Madrid is a people’s city and the exuberant way of life of the charming Madrileños is impossible to resist. Lovers of modern art should visit the Reina Sofia Museum where Picasso’s moving ‘Guernica’ is on show. Madrid is a wonderful base from which to explore the historic towns of Castilla that surround the capital such as Toledo, Avila, the Royal Palace of Aranjuez, the forbidding monastery at El Escorial and the majestic palace and retreat of Philip ll.
