A small town at the heart of the Navarra region, Olite was once the capital of a mediaeval kingdom, and this proud heritage is still visible in the well-preserved historic old town with its labyrinth of stately homes, Roman walls, Gothic arcades and charming churches. The undoubted highlight is the magnificent Royal Palace, the former court of the Kings of Navarre, and one of the most luxurious medieval castles in Europe. Built over a 13th century fortress that in turn was erected over Roman remains, it was largely designed by Charles III in a unique Gothic style combining French and Islamic influences.

The Parador de Olite occupies the oldest wing of the majestic Royal Palace of the Kings of Navarre, a Gothic fantasy of turrets and crenelations. Its counterpart, the so-called New Palace, dates back to the 15th century, and was built on top of the original Roman praesidium, archaeological remains of which can still be seen at the base of the towers.
