Famous for its international art fair, Basel is regarded as the art capital of Switzerland and is home to 40 galleries and museums. At its heart is the Kunstmuseum, with works by Picasso, Van Gogh, Rousseau, Mondrian, Hans Holbein the Younger and Modigliani among its varied collection. The centre of Basel is also home to a well-preserved old town with a maze of narrow streets, hidden squares and the striking city hall with its beautiful trompe l'oeil façade.
