Basel

City

Overview

Famous for its international art fair, Basel is regarded as the art capital of Switzerland and is home to 40 galleries and museums. At its heart is the Kunstmuseum, with works by Picasso, Van Gogh, Rousseau, Mondrian, Hans Holbein the Younger and Modigliani among its varied collection. However, we also recommend seeking out the Museum Tinguely, which has a wonderful location overlooking the Rhine and is dedicated to the unique kinetic art of Jean Tinguely, as well as the Foundation Beyeler, with its private collection of over 250 works, focused on Impressionist and 20th century painting with pieces by artists from Monet, Cézanne and Van Gogh to Picasso, Warhol, Lichtenstein and Bacon. The centre of Basel is also home to a well-preserved old town with a maze of narrow streets, hidden squares and the striking city hall with its beautiful trompe l'oeil façade. Bordering both France and Germany, it is not only an excellent city break destination, but it is also well-placed to combine with a longer tailor-made itinerary in either country, or as part of a holiday in the Swiss Alps.
