Aswan is the most southerly of the major towns on the Nile where the huge Aswan Dam created Lake Nasser that stretches 500 kilometers south towards the Sudan. It is a bustling town with an image identified by the many white feluccas that float along the Nile.

The Old Cataract Hotel and the surrounding area inspired Agatha Christie’s novel, ‘Death on the Nile.’ It opened in 1899 and is set in gardens at the end of the corniche overlooking the Nile and the legendary Elephantine Island. Victorian colonial architecture combines splendidly with oriental décor to give the feel of a bygone age.
