Dating from 1682, the buildings have been restored and declared a National Heritage Site Monument (its most recent renovation was in 2019). Reopening in July 2017 after a full refurbishment, the original manor house is one of the most perfect in the Winelands; it dates from 1707 and was awarded National Monument status in 1993.

The Lodge is located on a bluff looking out towards the Spioenkop Hill, the site of one of the most closely fought battles of the Anglo-Boer War. In the heart of historic Graaff-Reinet, opened in 2014, the Drostdy centres around several carefully restored 18th century houses including the famous Stretch's Court. The traditional parquet floors, African prints and animal skin rugs of the 48 rooms and suites reflecting both the town's history and the surrounding Karoo, are spread among hte different buildings linked by pedestrian paths.
