The Madikwe Game Reserve, close to the Botswana border, covers 75,000 hectares of open grassland, rolling hills and riverside forest along the tranquil Marico River. The area is home to the ‘Big Five’ and a myriad of other animal and bird species, including the African wild dog. Importantly for families, the reserve is free of malaria. Madikwe lies to the north west of Johannesburg, either 50 minutes by light aircraft or about four hours by road, making it an easy add-on at the beginning or at the end of your South African holiday.

Located in the heart of the reserve, a short drive from the eastern airstrip, Madikwe Safari Lodge comprises three intimate camps on the top of a hill with uninterrupted views of the reserve. One of the camps is known as Dithaba Lodge and it has just four suites, making it ideal for exclusive use. Each camp has its own public area; these are casual spaces with indoor and outdoor fireplaces.
This private lodge is a truly special place, situated in the north of the Madikwe Game Reserve and makes full use of giant Tamboti and Leadwood trees in its design. The ‘Big Five’ are present along with extensive plains game and over 340 species of birds. Children of all ages are welcome at Jaci’s. The spacious open-plan main lodge has a strong African feel and includes a great bar and lounge area separated from the dining area by a four-sided open fireplace.
