A five minute walk from Salisbury Cathedral
Salisbury Museum The museum is located in the King’s House in the glorious setting of the Cathedral Close. The King’s House is a Grade I listed building, dating back to the 13th century, and the museum now houses prehistoric material from south Wiltshire, including Stonehenge; the Pitt Rivers’ Wessex collection; and a fine mediaeval collection including finds from Old Sarum, Clarendon Palace and the city itself.
“Rex Whistler: The Artist and His Patrons” Rex Whistler (1905 – 1944) was one of the most prolific, diverse and popular artists of the interwar years in England. From 1928 until his death on active service in 1944, he designed entire rooms full of trompe l’oeil murals for his patrons, painted portraits of them and their houses, designed architectural improvements, as well as producing personal bookplates and illustrating their books. The exhibition will contain many previously unseen initial sketches from the museum’s Rex Whistler Archive, as well as loans from the National Trust, National Army Museum, Welsh Guards, West Dean College and private collections.
By car: Follow city centre signs to car parks or there is limited parking in Cathedral Close (parking charge approximately £10 per day). One of the closest public car parks can be found at Old George Mall, a 10 minute walk from the Musuem. By train: South West Trains and First Great Western to Salisbury. Buses to city centre or 1.2 km level walk, or approximately 5 minutes in a taxi.
Salisbury Cathedral has been a place of worship, welcome, and hospitality for over 800 years. Its spire (the tallest in the country and a feat of mediaeval engineering) rises to a breath-taking 404ft/123m, guiding travellers, merchants and pilgrims to the historic city. You can also discover how one of only four surviving original manuscripts of the 1215 Magna Carta came to the Cathedral and view it in a special exhibition. Prior to the Rex Whistler event, you may wish to join a 3pm private guided tour of Salisbury Cathedral including a light refreshment afterwards in the Cathedral’s café. Supplement of £20 pp.
