On Turner’s 250th birthday, Matthew Morgan will lead a special study day at Tate Britain, where we will see part of the Turner Bequest, including one of his personal sketchbooks from the archive, which is not on public display. After J.M.W. Turner’s death in 1851, the contents of his studio became the property of the nation, and the Turner Bequest comprises around 30,000 works on paper, including watercolours, drawings, 300 oil paintings and 280 bound sketchbooks.
Matthew will introduce the sketches in the morning, providing a unique insight into Turner’s methods. We will then explore the Tate’s Clore Gallery, which has nine rooms dedicated to Turner’s work, from his rise to prominence through his paintings of life at sea, his charming watercolour illustrations and vignettes for travel books, and more the groundbreaking experimental style of his later years.
Price per person: £79
Includes: Coffee and cake in the Members’ Room at Tate Britain, private guided visit of the Drawings Room, guided tour of the Turner rooms in the Clore Galleries and a souvenir book.
For the second study day Matthew will lead us on a walking tour around Turner's London and through the National Gallery to view some of his most iconic works. View details »
