A Journey Through Romania

9 nights Prices on request

Romania has experienced a colourful and dramatic history over the past 1,000 years. Under the control of Bulgaria, Hungary and then both the Ottoman and Habsburg empires, it was not until the downfall of the Ceausescus that Romania was able to forge its own independent path. Saxon villages, painted monasteries and churches, superbly preserved mediaeval towns and a welcoming people all combine to create one of the most enigmatic countries in Europe.

  • Day 2 - Bucharest walking tour & the Parliament Palace

Our stay in Bucharest will begin with a walking tour of the historic district close to the hotel. Later we will go to the National Museum of Art in the former Royal Palace and see two magnificent collections, one of Romanian and modern art, and the other of European art. We then visit Ceausescu’s ‘Parliament Palace’ – a permanent reminder of the grim years when Romania was ruled by the hated couple.
  • Day 3 - The Choral Temple, synagogues & Rural Museum

We start with a visit to the impressive former synagogue, to discover more about the history of the Jewish community in Romania. We then go to the Choral Temple, Bucharest’s main synagogue, and then to the church of Stavropoleos. We will have lunch in a traditional tea house and then visit the Rural Museum, a much loved institution. Here in a lovely three acre park, over 300 houses from villages around the nation can be seen.
  • Day 4 - Suceava

We travel by train to Suceava, in the region of Bukovina. A picnic lunch will be provided. We spend two nights at the 4 star Gerald’s Hotel in Rădăuți.
