Appian Way
Our new tour to The Eternal City, led by art historian and adopted-Roman Caroline Howard, which will showcase the city’s rich and varied cultural history from the perspective of a local expert. This tour offers fascinating insight into the rich architectural heritage of the city, which goes beyond the tourist highlights to reveal Rome’s ancient past, from its complex origins and the rise and fall of the Empire, through the Renaissance and into the 20th Century. Our visit traces the early origins of Rome and the foundational role played by the Etruscan Civilisation between the 6th - 8th centuries BCE, which influenced its development across areas such as architecture and urban planning, through to its religious practices. There will be visits to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of The Appian Way and Ostia Antica, two of Rome's most significant historical locations, which each offer a glimpse into the city's rich past, along with a variety of museums and several world-class galleries, including the Galleria Borghese - renowned for its extraordinary collection of Baroque and Renaissance masterpieces. We will also touch on Rome’s modern history, and visit the EUR (Esposizione Universale di Roma) district, which is a striking example of fascist urban planning and architecture.
The full tour promises a fascinating exploration of Rome's rich history, with our expert local guide taking us on a journey to discover the lesser explored features of this wonderful city.
