An Introduction to Albania

7 nights Prices on request

Whilst geographically compact, Albania’s location at the heart of the Balkans, wedged between northern Greece and Montenegro, and just 100 kilometres from the coast of southern Italy, has blessed the country with a diverse and vibrant landscape and compelling history. The direct flight to Tirana may be just three hours but it feels as if you have travelled far beyond Europe, to a fascinating country of exceptionally warm and friendly hospitality, delicious Mediterranean cuisine and some of the most beautiful and romantic ancient sites to be found anywhere.

Itinerary

  • Day 1 - Fly to Tirana

We fly from London Gatwick to Tirana where we stay for the first three nights. Tirana today is a lively, colourful city which has seen many urban improvements in the last decade. We stay at the 4 star Rogner Hotel in a leafy residential area a few minutes’ walk from the centre.
  • Day 2 - Tirana

This morning there will be a panoramic tour of the capital followed by a visit to the splendid National Historic Museum, which charts the history of the country from the daysof the national hero, Skanderbeg, through its Ottoman era to theshort-lived monarchy, World War II and the Communist epoch, which ended in 1990.  Albania was littered with thousands of bunkers during the Enver Hoxha years and some of them are nowbeing opened. We’ll visit one today, its terrifying gloom temperedby the art which is exhibited as part of the Bunk Art initiative.
  • Day 3 - Kruja

We drive though the dramatic scenery of the Sari Saltik mountain range to Krujë, where at the Skanderbeg Museum we learn how the eponymous hero saw off the forces of the Ottomans three times.
  • Day 4 - Byllis

We leave Tirana and head to the coast to Durres, once an important trading post linking Byzantium to Rome, and see its impressive Roman amphitheatre. Later we stop at Byllis, a 4th century BC settlement, the largest in southern Illyria. Its amphitheatre is built into the hills and overlooks an Arcadian landscape and the River Vjosa far below. It is easy to forget time here among the romantic ruins with only local shepherds and their here among the romantic ruins with only local shepherds and their flocks for company. We arrive in Vlora, an attractive town on thesea, for a one night stay.
  • Day 5 - Albanian Riviera

Leaving Vlora, we enjoy a magnificent coastal drive along what is now known as the Albanian Riviera. We pass through densely forested mountain roads and past pretty villages where houses are painted blue and white in traditional Greek style. The afternoon will be spent in Butrint, located in an unspoilt region between Lake Butrint, an inland lagoon, and the straits which separate Corfu from Albania. Dating back to the 7th century BC, this is a romantic site and whilst exploring it, visitors feel as if they are discovering it for the first time, in the same way as 18th century travellers must have done. We spend the night in Saranda, a lively resort famous for its fish restaurants.

Returning to Tirana, we stop in Gjirokastër, a town of narrow streets and picturesque houses, dominated by its great citadel. This is now used as a repository for rusting warmachinery stored by Enver Hoxha, who was born in the town in 1940. We stay for the final night of the tour in Tirana.
