On Friday 8th May Bruges welcomes a new exhibition space to its existing wealth of museums, galleries and unique historic sites. This new, modern open space is designed to host a series of temporary exhibitions, usually with two showing at a time. The inaugural exhibitions take two very different subject matters, but perhaps the most interesting is Bigger Picture...
8 May - 6 September 2026
Bruges emerged in the Middle Ages as a vibrant city, deeply connected to global networks of trade, culture, faith and politics. Far from isolated, it thrived through constant exchanges with Scandinavia, the Mediterranean, Jerusalem and the Islamic world, shaping its role in wider world history. The inaugural exhibition Bigger Picture explores these far‑reaching connections by tracing the influences of traders, crusaders and scholars on Bruges, and how the city in turn left its mark abroad. Structured into five chapters spanning different periods and continents, the exhibition highlights often overlooked stories of medieval globalisation, developed in collaboration with renowned historians including Prof. Peter Frankopan, author of the best-selling book 'The Silk Roads: A New History of the World'
Alongside pieces from Musea Brugge’s own collection, Bigger Picture brings exceptional artworks and historical objects from major international institutions, such as masterpieces by Hans Memling and Bellini, rare manuscripts from the Vatican and Oxford, archaeological finds and tapestries. The exhibition invites visitors to reconsider the Middle Ages through a broader, more interconnected global lens.
