Christmas brings a unique atmosphere to La Serenissima, returning Venice to a place of brooding mystery and beauty. It’s a time for the cognoscenti to enjoy the city’s undimmed charms in peaceand solitude. Galleries and museums remain open on most days so visitors will find them blissfully quiet. Our visits include Ca’Rezzonico with its 18th century art, the Frari, the Scuola Grande di San Rocco and the Cini Foundation on the island of San Maggiore. We stay at the 4 star Deluxe Monaco & Grand Canal Hotel, one of the most stylish in Venice, and will enjoy delicious Venetian cuisine, including a special Christmas lunch at the famous Hotel Danieli.

We fly from London Gatwick to Venice and on arrival transfer by water taxi to the 4 star Monaco & Grand Canal Hotel. Dinner will be taken at the Trattoria Ai Gondolieri this evening.
  • Day 2 - Ca' Rezzonico

We start the day with a visit to Church of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari to see works by Titian, Giovanni Bellini, Alessandro Vittoria and Donatello and the tomb of Canova. We will also visit the Scuola Grande di San Rocco to see the magnificent canvases by Tintoretto. After an independent lunch, we will go to Ca' Rezzonico, the finest of the palaces that line the Grand Canal. This Baroque masterpiece was built for the noble Bons family and dates from 1649. It now houses a museum dedicated to 18th century Venice.
  • Day 3 - Lunch

A free morning before we make our way to the Hotel Danieli for a special Christmas lunch in their wonderful restaurant, overlooking the lagoon.
  • Day 4 - Cini & Accademia

This morning we visit the wonderful Fondazione Giorgio Cini on the island of San Maggiore. Restored by Count Cini, this complex includes the Benedictine monastery, cloisters, refectory, library and the new Manica Lunga library, used as a military barracks from the time of Napoleon into the 20th century. This afternoon we will visit the Accademia, the ‘National Gallery of Venice’, which houses the most important collection of Venetian paintings from the 14th to the 17th century. Dinner this evening will be at one of our favourite local restaurants.
  • Day 5 - Guggenheim & San Marco

We will cross the Grand Canal and make our way to the nearby Palazzo Venier dei Leoni where Peggy Guggenheim’s collection of modern art is displayed in a magnificent setting overlooking the Grand Canal. Our morning ends with an optional visit to the Santa Maria della Salute.  At 20.30 we will enjoy a private visit of the exquisite Basilica of San Marco, a rare opportunity to explore one of Venice’s most important landmarks in the tranquillity which it deserves. We will see 8,000 square metres of golden mosaics and inspect the breathtaking Pala d’Oro, the altarpiece made of gold, enamel, jewels and precious stones.
  • Day 6 - Flight back
