Genoa - City of the Doges

Genoa 5 nights Price from £1,873 per person

One of the most beautiful coastlines in the whole of Europe, the Ligurian Riviera is also one of the least visited. Liguria is dominated by Genoa, a city that has only in recent years begun to attract visitors despite its artistic and architectural treasures. It rivalled Venice as the most important maritime trading centre in the Mediterranean, and like La Serenissima, it too was ruled by powerful Doges chosen from the city’s wealthiest families. The legacy of this great wealth is still visible in the city’s magnificent palaces, and our new tour will also include also excursions to Portofino and Santa Margherita on the glorious riviera coastline.

We fly to Genoa and transfer to the 4* Grand Hotel Savoia in the heart of the city. Dinner will be included this evening.
  • Day 2 - Exploring Genoa

We spend the first of our two days in the city exploring the via Garibaldi, lined by the immensely grand town houses once owned by the rulers of the city – we see the Palazzo Rosso, the Palazzo Bianco and the Palazzo Doria. We shall also visit the city’s most important art gallery at the Palazzo Spinola, and end the day at the Palazzo del Principe Doria Pamphili, built for Andrea Doria, one of the most powerful and richest of all the Genoese doges.
  • Day 3 - Santa Margherita Ligure

We drive eastwards along the beautiful Ligurian coastline towards Santa Margherita Ligure and on to Portofino: one of Europe’s most beautiful resorts. We will have an included lunch at the fabled Hotel Splendido overlooking the picturesque harbour.
  • Day 4 - Maritime Museum

Remaining in Genoa today, we will visit the Maritime Museum which tells the history of the city’s golden age. We also see the Cathedral of San Lorenzo with its typical Ligurian striped façade, and the Museo del Tesoro with its matchless collection of religious art and artefacts brought back to Genoa during the Crusades.
  • Day 5 - Palazzo Ravaschieri

We will drive along the coast again today to the mediaeval town of Chiavari where we will visit the Palazzo Ravaschieri. Here we will meet the architect/owner and have lunch in her home. Returning to Genoa there will be some time for independent exploration in the afternoon.
  • Day 6 - Flight

After a free morning we will drive to the airport for the flight back to London Gatwick.
