The Gotthard mountain pass is the historic link between central Switzerland and the Italian-speaking Ticino region – and one of the primary routes linking northern Europe to the Mediterranean. Beginning in Lugano, a charming lakeside town close to the Italian border, you travel through the 15 kilometre Gotthard Rail Tunnel, built in 1882 and many more looping tunnels as you traverse the Alps. Arriving on the other side, you will board a vintage paddle steamer at Flüelen to cross the crystal-clear waters of Lake Lucerne. You will pass historic locations such as the Rütliwiese, the Schillerstein and Tell Chapel, perhaps as you savour a delicious meal. At the end of an unforgettable 5hrs 30min journey you will arrive into Lucerne habour right next to the iconic Chapel Bridge.
