Itinerary

  • Day 1 - Novecento Hotel

We fly to Bologna and on arrival transfer to our hotel, the 4* Novecento, in the centre of the city.
  • Day 2 - Bologna

We will begin our holiday with a walking tour of the historic centre of Bologna, including the Basilica di San Petronio, the famous towers and the colonnaded arcades of shops, delicatessens and restaurants. We will also visit the great food market where we can see some of the famous fresh produce for sale. We will enjoy a delicious local lunch at the market, before visiting Bologna’s most grand delicatessen and bakery Paolo Atti & Figli, where we will have a behind-the-scenes tour. We will return to the hotel before dinner this evening, which will be taken at one of our favourite local restaurants.
  • Day 3 - Modena & Parma

Today is devoted to the neighbouring town of Modena. We will have a guided walking tour including visits to the wonderful food market, the Mercato Albinelli, and the magnificent Romanesque Duomo, founded in 1099. We will then visit the Acetaia of Mazzetti, one of the most important producers of Balsamic Vinegar – which is stored in vast barrels and played arias to help it mature. We will continue to Parma where we have lunch together at Sorelle Picchi. After lunch we will have a walking tour of Parma including a visit the pink marble Baptistery and the art gallery housed in the imposing Palazzo della Pilotta before returning to our hotel in Bologna.
  • Day 4 - Florence

We will visit local producers of the famous Parmesan and Proscuitto di Parma this morning, before returning to Bologna to board the train to Florence, the cradle of the Renaissance. We will have lunch at a local restaurant before travelling to Florence where we stay for a further three nights at the hotel Santa Maria Novella (4* superior). In the evening we will enjoy dinner at a traditional Florentine restaurant Il Latini.
  • Day 5 - Chianti hills

Today we will travel into the countryside outside Florence to a vineyard in the Chianti hills for a wine-tasting. After the visit we continue to the 14th century monastery at Galluzzo for a tour of the monastery including magnificent frescoes by Pontormo, followed by a coffee or liqueur from the monks’ distillery. Lunch will be taken in the historic Trattoria Bibe before we return to Florence. Dinner will be taken independently this evening.
  • Day 6 - Florence walking tour

This morning we will enjoy a walking tour with an expert local guide, culminating at the Piazza Duomo, dominated by Brunelleschi’s magnificent cupola, and the adjacent Museo dell’Opera. We will also visit the Mercato San Lorenzo before lunch together at Ristorante del Fagioli. The afternoon is at leisure –you may wish to visit one of Florence’s great art galleries, and entrance tickets will be provided for the Uffizi, Accademia or the Bargello Gallery.
  • Day 7 - Lucca

We will check out of the hotel this morning and drive to the walled city of Lucca, where we will stay for the final night at the Albergo Celide (3* superior). We will have a walking tour with a local expert guide before lunch at the historic Ristorante Buca di Sant’Antonio. The afternoon is free to explore the charming town centre.
  • Day 8 - Return flight from Pisa
