The Bavarian capital, Munich is perhaps Germany’s most beautiful city, and is home to one of the great galleries of Europe, the Alte Pinakothek. With the distant Alps as a backdrop, the city seems to owe more to Austria than Germany, and this itinerary will take you onwards by efficient first-class trains, first to Salzburg – Mozart’s birthplace and a well-preserved medieval town, and then to Vienna, to one-time capital of the great Habsburg Empire. Don’t forget to ask about tickets for a concert or opera in all three cities.

For all of our clients travelling to Vienna, we are delighted to include a Masterticket which gives you entrance to the Leopold Museum and the Kunsthistorisches Museum (Museum of Fine Arts). The Kunsthistorisches was built by Emperor Franz Joseph to house the vast Habsburg collections – amongst its many highlights is one of the foremost collections of Old Masters.
In contrast, the Leopold Museum is the home of Austrian modern art and includes works by the founder of the Vienna Secession movement, Gustav Klimt. The Kunstkammer at the Kunsthistorisches Museum is highly recommended; it reopened in 2013 after a 10 year restoration and is one of the world’s most important chambers of art.
A hotel of excellent quality, located in a small side street just outside the southwestern corner of the Ringstrasse, some ten minutes’ walk from the Opera House.
A truly delightful townhouse that has been owned by the same family for three generations, the Auersperg is located in a quiet part of Salzburg, yet it is just five minutes’ walk from the pedestrianised Linzergasse and 15 minutes from the River Salzach and the Old Town.
A hotel since 1450, the privately-owned Torbrau is the oldest in Munich, has a great location, just two minutes’ walk from Marienplatz and has a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Our expert reservations team regularly travel to a wide range of destinations to explore new cities, visit hotels and to research museums, galleries and restaurants so that we can offer the most up-to-date advice and recommendations.
