Since the birth of the Renaissance, Florence has been one of the most important destinations for discerning travellers with an appreciation of art, but it was the Grand Tourists of the 18th century who made Florence an essential component in a cultural education. By the second half of the 19th century a third of the population of Florence were foreigners, the majority of them made up the British Colony, who went on to found the British Institute in 1917. The Institute still runs art and language courses from its 16th century palazzo on the banks of the Arno, and our new tour will be led by Head of Art History Jeremy Boudreau. In addition to the best art galleries and churches in the city, we shall enjoy a lecture at the Institute’s Harold Acton Library, and a private visit to the Villa La Pietra, the 14th century palace in the hills above Florence, which was the Acton family home.

Over recent years, the Piazza Santa Maria Novella has undergone significant change. Many of the buildings, including the beautiful church have been restored and the square itself is now virtually traffic free. As well as a fantastic location, only five minutes’ walk from the Duomo and the prestigious Via Tornabuoni shopping street, we think this fine hotel is the city’s best traditional four star.
