Exhibition
Palazzo Strozzi
14 March 2026 - 23 August 2026
Mark Rothko (1903-1970) was the undisputed master of American modern art. He rose to prominence for his distinctive abstract canvases which feature large swathes of bold colours in irregular blocks.
Rothko developed a special relationship to Florence during his first visit in 1950 where he was deeply moved by Fra Angelico’s frescoes at the convent of San Marco; leading him to consider how freedom of expression, abstraction and colour theory could be applied to explore new perspectives. From March 14 to August 23 2026 Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi will be tracing Rothko’s entire career with over 70 works from prestigious private collections and international museums, including New York’s Museum of Modern Art and the Tate Modern. The exhibition examines how Rothko’s work juxtaposes precise classical measure with artistic freedom and in turn, transcends the dimensions of the canvas itself.

Florence, Italy
Over recent years, the Piazza Santa Maria Novella has undergone significant change. Many of the buildings, including the beautiful church have been restored and the square itself is now virtually traffic-free. As well as a fantastic location, only five minutes’ walk from the Duomo and the prestigious via Tornabuoni shopping street, we think this fine hotel is the city’s best traditional four-star.
