Statue of J.S. Bach, Thomaskirche, Leipzig
This year marks the 300th anniversary of the first performance of Bach's St Matthew Passion in Leipzig, and our tour tracing the composer’s life and work will culminate in a commemorative performance conducted by Sir Simon Rattle. Organist Oliver Condy, former editor of BBC Music Magazine and currently working for Apple Classical Music, leads this tour following Johann Sebastian Bach through the historic towns and cities of Thuringia and Saxony. Oliver will give recitals on different organs associated with the composer, and we have timed the tour to arrive in Leipzig during the annual Bach Festival. Bach lived and worked in the city for 27 years between 1723 and 1750, and we will see performances at three churches including the Goldberg Variations performed by Zhu Xiao-Mei at the Paulinum Chapel, the Monteverdi Choir at St Nicholas’s Church, and the 'St Matthew Passion' at St. Thomas’s Church.
