The first capital of a unified Italy, Turin enjoys a stunning location surrounded by the Alps and the vineyards of the Piedmont countryside, with the River Po flowing through its centre. The seat of the Savoy dynasty since the 16th century, Turin was declared the capital of the newly unified Kingdom of Italy in 1861. The expanding Kingdom moved its capital to Florence and then to Rome shortly afterwards, but Turin remains one of Italy’s most under-visited, yet distinctly fascinating cities. We will see grand architecture, Renaissance palaces, first-rate museums and historic cafés and restaurants which lend it an atmosphere more akin to Central Europe than to Italy. Outside the city limits we shall also explore the Piedmontese countryside – the home of white truffles, Barolo vineyards and the palaces of the Dukes of Savoy.
