Embark on a captivating journey where history and archaeology come to life through Mount Vesuvius and the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Based in Naples, you will be accompanied by volcanologist Professor Christopher Kilburn, as well as local expert guides who will offer insights into the history and ongoing excavations of this remarkable region.
The eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD is one of the most important events in history, not only due to the destruction wrought on the towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum, but also because of the remarkable levels of preservation in both cities – which were, in effect, frozen in time. They have become an enormously valuable resource for archaeologists and historians ever since, firing up the public imagination to this day.
This tour will not only take in the two archaeological sites, but also includes a day devoted to Vesuvius itself. There will also be two days in the fascinating and enigmatic city of Naples, where you will see the finest treasures recovered from Pompeii, as well as world-class art collections. With Naples as your base, you will also have the opportunity to experience the city's vibrant culture, stunning waterfront and legendary cuisine.
Accompanying you throughout will be volcanologist Professor Christopher Kilburn, who will give a series of talks and walking lectures covering topics relating to volcanology and specifically the Vesuvius eruption.
Christopher Kilburn is Professor of Volcanology at University College London (UCL) and Director of the UCL Hazard Centre. A fledgling freelance science writer at the start of his career, he has belonged to the Association of British Science Writers since 1978. It is not easy, though, to escape the lure of volcanoes and so he has spent the last four decades investigating their behaviour, enjoying positions in Italy - at the Vesuvius Observatory in Naples, the University of Naples Federico II and the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Rome -as well as at the Montserrat Volcano Observatory, University of Vienna (Austria), NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (California, U.S.A) and the University of Lancaster.
in 1997 he co-founded with Bill McGuire the Greig Fester UCL Hazard Research Centre (today the UCL Hazard Centre), Europe’s first academic multi-hazard research centre and, in 2002, he launched the UK’s first Master’s programme in Geophysical Hazards.
