Sicily is the crossroads of the Mediterranean and waves of successive conquerors – from the Phoenicians to the Ancient Greeks to the Normans, have left behind their cultural legacies. Today, this is visible in the architecture, the wonderful and varied food – and, of course, the wine. Sicily is one of the engines of the Italian wine industry producing twice as much as New Zealand. Vineyards thrive on the low plains, the mountains and volcanic slopes. We will explore the rich variety of wines produced across the eastern part of the island on this tour of Sicily.

  • Day 1 - Fly to Catania

    We fly to Catania and drive to Taormina. We stay here at the 4 star Hotel Monte Tauro, located close to the Botanical Gardens and overlooking the Bay of Naxos below. The afternoon is free before we meet for a tasting and dinner.
  • Day 2 - Faro

    Today we explore the Mamertino and Faro wine regions near the straits of Messina which historically were very important (the Romans considered these wines to be some of the finest in the world). Viticulture all but died out until very recently, but now the region is flourishing once more. We visit a couple of the rising star estates and enjoy lunch at one of the farms.
  • Day 3 - Etna

    Etna’s volcanic soil and altitude are perfect for vines and the main red grape, Nerello Mascalese, is rated as seriously exciting by winemakers. High on the east slope, we visit Barone de Villagrande who make organic wines. We will see more of Etna and the wineries as we drive to Syracuse where we stay for two nights in a hotel overlooking Ortigia Island.
  • Day 4 - Syracuse

    This morning we visit the site of ancient Syracuse, once the most important city in Magna Graecia. Then we drive to the perfectly-preserved Baroque town of Noto. This evening we will have dinner with paired wines at a local producer.
  • Day 5 - Vittoria

    We drive inland this morning to visit some famous wineries, including the beautiful estate of Cos. The pioneer of ‘biodynamic’ wines has reintroduced pithos, (clay pots) for winemaking. This evening we will have dinner in Syracuse.
  • Day 6 - Fly to London

    We will have a winery lunch before our flight back to London from Catania
