Formerly a 17th-century hunting lodge, the Castel Fragsburg occupies a stunning private park and perches on a bluff overlooking Merano, the vineyards of the Alto Adige valley and the dramatic peaks of the Dolomites. The wisteria-clad loggia and terrace offer a breath-taking panorama all the way to Bolzano, 35 kilometres away. On entering the beautiful, wood-panelled reception, the sense of history is apparent, as it is in the 20 sumptuous bedrooms – each has a balcony or terrace and a memorable view. The service offered by Alexander Ortner and his team is exceptional and the cooking in the famous Michelinstarred restaurant is worth the journey alone. There is a summer swimming pool and a spa. The surrounding countryside is perfect for walking and cycling. The spa town of Merano is close by, as is Trauttmansdorff Castle with its wonderful botanical gardens.
