Short Break
Located right on a sandy beach, Torre Mozza is a 16th century watchtower commissioned by the wealthy Appiani family who wanted to keep a close eye on the transportation of precious minerals from the nearby island of Elba. Restored and reopened in 2015, it is now a unique and intimate hotel with just eight suites mixing original features such as exposed stone and wooden beams with contemporary design, modern art and marine themed sculptures. Although air-conditioned, many guests prefer leaving the windows open and enjoying the cooling breeze and the sound of the waves breaking on the tower below. There is a roof terrace with panoramic views and a jacuzzi (roof terrace only available for private hire – charges apply), a small veranda overlooking the beach to one side and a restaurant serving delicious seafood and fine local wines. A private area of the beach is designated for hotel guests – sun beds and parasols are available at no additional charge. Service is laidback yet attentive and the staff can help to arrange cooking classes, yacht cruises and guided vineyard tours. 1 hour 20 minutes’ drive from Pisa, the area is famous for its marine parks, Etruscan ruins and picturesque villages. No lift. Hotel open 31 March – 14 October.
