Where to Go In January
The depths of winter call for a dose of life-giving sunshine, and there are a surprising number of destinations which offer bright sunny days even in January.
Head to Southern Africa where it is high summer, and a great time to spot the Big Five on safari. Combine a stay in one of our recommended game parks with a relaxing few days relaxing on the beach, or travelling through the rolling countryside of Stellenbosch or the Cape Winelands. There is no better way to enjoy South Africa’s fine vintages and some of the continent’s most acclaimed cuisine than a tailor-made holiday in the Western Cape. If you are just seeking a short break, don’t forget that Cape Town is eminently practical for a long weekend, with little time difference from the UK there is minimal jet-lag, and you can maximise your time in this fascinating cosmopolitan city. Returning home with memories of an al fresco lunch on the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, with majestic Table Mountain behind you and a glass of local wine in hand, will stave off the January blues for the rest of the month at least.
For those who prefer a shorter flight, we can thoroughly recommend the subtropical island of Madeira – just four hours away from the UK. The climate remains attractive all year round, and visitors can enjoy exceptional gardens, world class golf courses and walks along the spectacular levadas with views of the dramatic landscape below. Our range of hotels includes the famous Reid’s Palace – where guests including George Bernard Shaw, Winston Churchill and Roger Moore have retreated for winter sunshine and the famous afternoon tea on the terrace for over a century – as well as charming traditional ‘Quintas’ in the hills above Funchal.
A few hours east instead of west, will bring you to the fascinating city of Muscat in Oman – where you are guaranteed year-round sunshine, comfortable hotels and a surprisingly fascinating history. Sun seekers will enjoy the opportunity to relax in one of the excellent resort hotels around the capital, whilst those with a taste for adventure can explore the desert oases and historic forts of the interior with a day trip or a longer tailor-made itinerary.
