Where to Go In March

The end of winter and beginnings of spring make for an excellent month to head south for early spring sunshine, or enjoy excellent value for money in many classic cities. During the month of March, most hotels still offer low season prices, but weather in the Mediterranean can be mild and sunny.

Côte d’Azur & Monaco

One of the best micro-climates in Europe is on the Côte d’Azur, where days are often bright and temperatures can be pleasant – although cooler at night. At this time of year Nice makes for an excellent base from which to explore the coastline by train. The revitalised Old Town offers excellent local restaurants and several art galleries, whilst nearby Cannes, Juan-les-Pins and St Jean-Cap-Ferrat are among the charming coastal town which make for easy day trips. A little further east is the Principality of Monaco – the famous enclave of jet set residents, glamorous casinos and a harbour lined with flamboyant yachts. Visit during March and Kirker clients can benefit from a range of exclusive special offers, thanks to our partnership with the Monaco Government Tourism Authority.

For a guarantee of warmer weather it pays to travel a little further afield, and Tenerife in the Canary Islands offers year-round sunshine and mild winters. Visitors in March can expect pleasant, warm days, perfect for exploring the island’s spectacular volcanic terrain and unusual endemic species of flora and fauna. Escape the crowds in the developed resorts of the south and stay in one of our carefully selected hotels on the unspoilt north coast – or perhaps the Parador Las Canadas del Teide, in the National Park on the slopes of Mount Teide. To truly escape the hoi polloi, head to the neighbouring island of La Gomera: a tiny, undeveloped and idyllic retreat which is just 40 minutes from Tenerife by fast ferry.

One of our favourite cities in Europe, Seville is at its best in the month of March – before the crowds descend for Holy Week and the annual April Feria. The weather is mild and the orange blossom is just starting to bloom in the streets. Enjoy some of Spain’s finest tapas, explore the winding streets of the gothic Jewish Quarter, and perhaps take in a flamenco performance – ask the Kirker concierge for details.

At the opposite end of the Mediterranean, Athens offers two millennia of history and a climate which is at its most inviting in early spring. The iconic silhouette of the Parthenon looks over the city below, and visitors in March will find it more rewarding to explore without the masses that arrive during the summer months. The state-of-the-art Acropolis Museum, at the foot of the monument, now displays the finest archaeological finds in spacious galleries with panoramic windows looking back at the site itself. Athens is also a vibrant city with some excellent cafes, bars and restaurants – and for a longer holiday it makes a perfect base from which to continue to Mycenae, Epidaurus or the Peloponnese.
