Where to Go In October

October is an excellent month to explore European cities – with mild weather perfect for sightseeing, and a full range of cultural events including exhibitions, festivals and concerts. The last of the late summer sunshine can still be found around the Mediterranean, whilst further north the winter is still yet to arrive in earnest.

Mallorca

For autumn sunshine in October, the islands of the Mediterranean are the best destination – head to Mallorca for example, where you can enjoy a delicious al fresco lunch overlooking the sea, wander through the tight cobbled alleys of Palma’s old town, and take the scenic railway up to Soller. The gloriously unspoilt north coast is a stark contrast with the developed south-east, and is home to dramatic sea cliffs, sandy coves and picturesque villages such as the famous artists’ village of Deia – where you will find one of our favourite hotels, Belmond La Residencia (5* Deluxe) – or the village of Valldemossa, where the composer Frederic Chopin spent a winter with his partner George Sand.

Sicily

The largest Mediterranean island, Sicily is also at its best in October, when the temperatures are pleasant, sunshine plentiful and visitors are fewer. It is an extraordinarily diverse island with fascinating history encompassing Phoenician, Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Norman conquests – visible today in the majestic temples at Agrigento, the cathedrals at Monreale and Cefalu, and the Baroque villages of the south-east. The best way to experience Sicily is on a tailor-made multi-centre holiday, or as part of a small group escorted tour. The island is simply too vast to do it justice from one base, so it is more rewarding to split your time between two or three different parts of the island over a ten day or two week period. If you have less time to spare, why not focus on just the west or east side of the island? Or if you just have a few days then consider a city break in Palermo, perhaps staying at the immaculately restored Villa Igeia (5* Deluxe), where you can sample authentic Sicilian cuisine and perhaps an opera performance at the magnificent Teatro Massimo – ask the Kirker Concierge for details of schedules and tickets, or just climb the grand stone steps, which had a starring role in The Godfather...

Europe's Capitals of Culture

By October, the cultural calendar is well under-way in some of Europe’s great capitals including Berlin, Vienna and Paris, and the Kirker Concierge is again a great source of information on the best new art exhibitions, opera and ballet productions or museum openings – call 020 7593 2286 or email concierge@kirkerholidays.com for details and tickets.

Half-Term Holidays

Image

If you are looking for a half term holiday – either to take the whole family, or to escape from them, then we can recommend the best hotels to suit your particular requirements. It may be a relaxing resort hotel with entertainment and facilities for everyone – the Verdura Resort (5* Deluxe) in Sicily for example, where adults can enjoy world-class golf and spa facilities while children explore the swimming pools and kids club, all within a day trip of the ancient temples of Agrigento for that all-important dose of culture. Alternatively, it might be a city break which combines a change of scenery with a chance for some hands-on learning – whether that means brushing up on their French in the brasseries of Paris, walking the streets of Pompeii and Herculaneum to bring Ancient Rome to life, or perhaps exploring the fascinating 20th century history of Berlin in the East Side Gallery and the Wall Museum. Speak to the Kirker Concierge for advice and excursions designed to appeal to all members of the party.
