Six hours on a ferry! I thought what a long time to spend on a boat for 2 nights away.

We travelled out a Saturday morning on Brittany ferries from Portsmouth to Caen. I have to confess that I was a little concerned that six hours (each way) on a boat for a 2 night break would be too long - however, the ferry experience turned out to be a highlight of the trip. It was more like a relaxing mini cruise: I spent the time shopping, catching up on my favourite book with a drink at the bar followed by a surprisingly good lunch (thank you to the Kirker Concierge for his recommendation) of fresh crevettes, smoked salmon terrine all washed down with a delicious glass of Chablis - all tables included a fantastic sea view. Before I knew it we arrived totally relaxed and looking forward to our 2 nights away from the kids.

In terms of driving on arrival in France, I would urge everyone to avoid the fast route by dual carriageway, and potter along the scenic D roads which follow the coastline. The D514 runs through the most important villages involved in the D-day landings and the route only adds an extra 20 minutes to the journey time, excluding the many short stops we took to take photographs as we paused for reflection.

The Scallop Festival was in full swing at Port-en-Bessin the day we arrived and the town was buzzing with the sound and music of the French locals and tourists gathered to celebrate the 'Gout du Large'. My enthusiasm was reaching fever pitch by now as I had a table reserved at the hotel's restaurant for their seasonal taster menu.

I was so impressed by the cuisine that we booked to eat in the hotel's restaurant the following night too.

I would recommend the Château La Chenèviere to anyone who is looking for a base from which to visit Normandy's landing beaches - it is also perfect for exploring the delightful countryside in the area. For those who prefer to stay in Bayeaux, it is only 15 minutes by taxi to the chateau for dinner in a wonderful setting with outstanding service and gourmet dining at very reasonable prices. The Kirker Concierge can book a table - and, most importantly, arrange for an expert private guide to ensure you make the most of the many sites and museums devoted to the Normandy Landings.
