A night at the opera in Verona is an experience to behold. As dusk falls on a warm summer’s evening, 15,000 people wait in anticipation for the spectacle to unfold on the world’s largest outdoor opera stage. Even for those who are not opera aficionados, the impressive production, stunning costumes and electric atmosphere in this vast open-air venue make it an evening to remember.
The amphitheatre’s size means you can pay more to be up close to the action or sit a little further back to take in more of the atmosphere. Locals are proud to have this Opera on their doorstep, and they come nightly to fill up the last-minute seats on the stone steps all the way to the top of the amphitheatre. Those at the top have great panoramic views.
The performance of Aida we watched was spectacular and much more contemporary than expected. Before the show, a delicious meal in one of Verona's many quality restaurants is a must; we dined at Vittorio Emanuele, once frequented by Maria Callas, an American-Greek soprano who was one of the most renowned opera singers of the 20th century. Vittorio Emanuele is considered by many to be the best restaurant of many lining the elegant Piazza Bra overlooking the arena. From the large outdoor terrace, you can watch the crowds gather at the Opera doors, and then simply stroll over to take your seat in the arena. Perfetto!
