A cooking class is a special way to engage with the local culture and people. Start the tour by meeting a professional chef at the Mercado del Olivar, Palma’s main food market and the perfect place to learn about the unique ingredients to Mallorquin cuisine. The chef takes you through the market sourcing the ingredients from the fruit to the fish vendors taking in the wonderful smells and tasting a little of the jamón ibérico which melts in the mouth. Another meat typical of the Balearics is the sobressada which is delicious spread on a slice of fresh bread drizzled with olive oil.

After the market and perhaps buying some of the olive oil to take home, it is just a short walk through the historic streets of Palma to the 18th century bakery Forn de Sa Llotgeta. Stepping into the studio there is a warm aroma of olive oil, fresh herbs and hearty tomatoes and you swap your role as a tourist for an apron and a chopping board. It is a hands-on experience preparing the Mallorca seasonal menu together with dishes such as the coca mallorquina, a Mallorcan style flatbread, and a sweet empanada filled with apricot jam for dessert.Whilst you are chopping, grating and kneading the dough the chef introduces you to the history of the island’s food culture and influences.
There is, of course, a paring of local wine to enjoy alongside the fruits of your labours. Eating in the bakery it feels like a step back in time and an opportunity to engage wholeheartedly with Mallorquin cuisine and culture.
David, our Concierge, will be able to book this experience for both groups and couples alike.
