After an early morning flight from Heathrow we passed through the airport with ease and were greeted by a Kirker representative and whisked to an awaiting Mercedes - the perfect start to a weekend in Prague. From here we were driven the short distance to our home for the weekend, the K + K Hotel Central. As the name suggests, the hotel is in the heart of the city, and in fact it was formally a theatre. The period architectural details such as stained glass and wrought iron are combined with a modern, contemporary design making this a fantastic base for exploring the city.' 'One of the best ways to discover historic Prague is in the company of a local Kirker guide - an expert who can explain the city and its fascinating history from an individual perspective. To help make the most of a short break here, all Kirker clients now recieve a complimentary morning walking tour with an expert local, and I had the pleasure of being escorted by the wonderful Rosa who accompanied me on the short 5 minute walk from the hotel to the Old Town Square. She really brought the city to life, sharing her knowledge and her own perspective on the city. Situated along the banks of the Vltava River with the castle and Lesser Town on the one side and the Old Town and Josefov district (Old Jewish quarter) on the other, this is a city which is easily covered on foot. 'What struck me most upon venturing through the city was the architecture. Its pristine and varied collection, ranging from Baroque and Renaissance to Gothic and Art Nouveau, is really something to be marvelled at. The castle dominates the skyline from its dramatic hilltop site, looking down onto the maze of cobbled streets in the Lesser Town. The iconic Gothic towers of the Charles Bridge span the river and lead across to the Old Town mand its landmarks such as the Old Town Square, the Powder Tower (once a part of the old city gates) and the Municipal Building, an excellent example of Art Nouveau architecture. 'If your feet get a little tired while wandering the city then make sure to take a break at the famous Café de Paris where they serve excellent coffee - if you really want to indulge then try the speciality Café Paris coffee as well as their signature cake, made exclusively for the Hotel Paris.'Although I visited Prague in August, this is a city that can be equally enjoyed in the winter. The Christmas Markets and snow-dusted rooftops are ideal for the festive season. Prague is not certainly no one hit wonder - its numerous concerts, operas, ballets, festivals and museums mean that it is a destination which will reward visitors time and time again.'
