Rome is a city filled with history, art, and culture, and my most recent visit was completely enhanced by our private guide, Daniela. Her expertise and insights made our trip unforgettable as she accompanied us to the Vatican, the Borghese Gallery, the Colosseum, and on a city walking tour.
Day 1: The Vatican
We first met Daniela outside the Vatican. Even in November, the queues outside this extremely popular monument stretched down the road. Having our guide meet us there made the experience of getting in much less overwhelming, as she led us to the correct queue and provided some introductory knowledge as we waited.
Once inside, Daniela expertly navigated us through the many hallways and courtyards. Despite the crowds, she always found a space for our group to stand where we could all hear her and learn about the art and history. I was particularly intrigued by the gallery of maps and the symbolism in the frescos in the Raphael Rooms.
After our visit to the Sistine Chapel, Daniela took us through a completely empty corridor, a secret shortcut to the front of St Peter's Basilica. This provided a moment of quiet away from the bustling crowds, who all followed a different route.
Around 20,000 people visit the Vatican each day, and there are over 20,000 artworks on display, so it could be easy to get lost and miss important pieces. Having an expert guide was invaluable, making the day much less stressful than a self-guided tour, and ensuring we got the most out of our experience.

Day 1: The Borghese Gallery
Later that day, we met Daniela for a guided tour of the Borghese Gallery. Again, the wealth of incredible artwork could be overwhelming, but Daniela's extensive knowledge was extraordinary. She knew the history behind every piece in the gallery and seamlessly wove them together to tell the story of the Borghese family and the history of Italian Renaissance art.
The gallery is full of Bernini's incredible sculptures. One piece that caught my interest was "Truth Unveiled by Time," an unfinished sculpture. Daniela pointed out the small pieces of marble that remain unchipped away between the figure's fingers, as Bernini moved on to more important projects. This detail would have gone unnoticed without her insight.

Day 2: City Walking Tour
The next morning, we met Daniela for a guided walking tour around the centre of Rome. Well acquainted with our guide, we were ready to learn more about the ancient city itself.
This tour was the perfect way to get our bearings and see some wonderful ancient monuments. The Trevi Fountain, while stunning, was extremely busy, so we moved on to the Fountain of the Four Rivers, which we were able to get much closer to. Daniela taught us how each figure on the fountain represents the main rivers on each continent, and how the Nile’s figure has its face covered as they hadn't yet found its source when the fountain was built in the 1600s.
We also passed by the Pantheon, where Daniela explained how the building was used as an ancient sundial to determine the time of year. Walking around the city with a local helped me understand how the ancient city is embedded in the daily lives of modern Romans.
Day 3: The Colosseum and Roman Forum
On our final day, we met Daniela for a tour around the Colosseum and the Roman Forum. She helped paint a vivid picture of what it would have been like to watch a gladiator show as a Roman hundreds of years ago. I found it very helpful that she brough with her a book of pictures depicting recreations of the Colosseum in its heyday which she lined up with the remains of the ruins.
It was particularly interesting to learn about the trap doors installed in the arena floor, which released wild animals captured from Africa and Asia into the fight. The doors were sized differently for various animals, including lions, wolves, and hippos.
When we moved on to the Roman Forum, we bypassed the long queue and walked straight in through the private guide entrance. Exploring the incredible ancient structures was the perfect end to our trip to Rome.
Overall, Daniela’s guidance showed me how a private guide elevates your trip from a standard holiday to an immersive cultural experience. Her knowledge and passion for Rome made our visit truly unforgettable.
