The town of Vila Real de Santo António is situated on the banks of the River Guadiana which separates Portugal and Spain and has a completely different atmosphere from the busy tourist resorts to the west of Faro. With a precise matrix of streets around a large, central square, the town has a variety of 18th century architecture, a good choice of restaurants serving freshly caught fish and a pretty promenade.
