In the heart of the Alentejo countryside, the wine estate of Herdade da Malhadinha Nova is two hours drive from Lisbon and 90 minutes from Faro Airport to the south. In a bucolic setting, the Soares family has renovated the old farm buildings to create a modern winery alongside a very stylish rural retreat. Across six buildings there is a combination of rooms, suites and self-catering villas, some with private pools, which are perfect for families and groups of friends. The hotel at the heart of the estate has six guest rooms, with access to two swimming pools as well as a wine bar, library and spa, which uses the local wine, honey and rosemary in their bespoke treatments. The ambitious restaurant (closed Sunday and Monday) offers beautifully-presented organic cuisine under the direction of the award-winning chef Joachim Koerper, incorporating produce from the hotel’s vegetable garden, and the Alentejo’s own black pork and beef.
