The historic Kingdom of Aragon was one of the most important powers in mediaeval Europe, at one point ruling over not only the north-eastern quarter of the Iberian peninsula including Barcelona, Valencia and Mallorca, but also Sicily, Corsica, Sardinia and Naples. Today, this landlocked and affluent, yet sparsely-populated, region stretches from the Pyrenees south to the city of Zaragoza, the regional capital, and through the Ebro Valley. In Zaragoza and Teruel you will find well-preserved Mudéjar Architecture, local wines and olive oil and delicious cuisine including particularly prized local jamon and pasture-raised lamb from the Pyrenees.
