León can trace its history from Roman times and became an important staging post on the pilgrims’ road to Santiago. The13th century Gothic cathedral with its magnificent stained glass dominates; whilst Gaudi’s influence is evident at the Casa de Botines. A highlight of the old city is the Humedo quarter. León is just over two hours by high-speed train from Madrid and a 90 minute drive from Burgos.
