El Jem
Strategically positioned between the shores of the Mediterranean and the dunes of the Sahara, Tunisia and its ancient city of Carthage was one of North Africa’s most successful trading ports and a key part of the Roman Empire. The country has played a central role in the development of North African civilisation, with the rise and fall of Greek, Phoenician, Roman and Berber empires. After they left, Tunisia fell under a heady mix of Byzantine, Norman and Ottoman rulers, each of which left an indelible imprint on the local culture. In this tour, we focus on Tunisia’s Mediterranean coastline, travelling south to trace its ancient past and cultural highlights, with visits to five UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
