A painter and prolific art collector at the turn of the 20th century, Gustave Fayet is the focal point of this autumn's impressive new exhibition at the Fondation Louis Vuitton. The gallery will devote its entire exhibition space to both Fayet's own art and his exceptional collection, which includes highlights will be Vincent van Gogh’s Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear (1889), which has not been on public display in France since 1937. Fayet was a close friend of Paul Gauguin, and the exhibition will also feature 78 of his pieces, as well as 88 works by Odilon Redon, and many other works by the most influential artists of this period including Degas, Cézanne, Toulouse-Lautrec and Renoir. Alongside this collection, there will be 375 of Fayet’s personal works including his decorative arts designs, and the exhibition will examine the relationship between creating, collecting and a commitment to art that was so central to Fayet’s life.
