Drawing on the extensive international collection of portraits at the Gemäldegalerie, enhanced by a selection of loans, this exhibition spans five centuries of portraiture, juxtaposing styles and drawing similarities. Through the comparison of works from diverse regions and eras, visitors can see how artistic decisions and visual strategies have changed over hundreds of years. Across four sections of the exhibition, the artworks range from opulent depictions of rulers to intimate, simple scenes, as well as self-portraits. Masterpieces come into contact with each other from the poised Renaissance works of Botticelli to the stylised Art Deco portraiture of Lempicka. Other highlights from the diverse range of artists include works by Rogier van der Weyden, Dürer, Giorgione, Rubens and Gainsborough.
