The Savonlinna Opera Festival began in 1912 thanks to the efforts of Finnish soprano Aino Ackté who saw that the romantic setting of the medieval Olavinlinna Castle on Lake Saimaa would be a perfect stage for opera thanks to its covered stage and excellent acoustics. Today, the covered auditorium inside the castle courtyard seats an audience of 2,200, for varied and high-calibre performances in the long Nordic summer evenings.
Held annually in the city of Savonlinna, Finland, the festival is a cultural phenomenon that combines the beauty of Finnish culture with the rich history of opera, making it a must-visit for music lovers and cultural enthusiasts alike. The festival features a diverse range of operas, including world-class performances of classics and rarely seen works, as well as world premieres and visiting productions from esteemed opera houses like La Scala.
Despite war putting a stop to Savonlinna's artistic activities for decades, opera returned to the city in 1967, and has since flourished, with more than 700,000 people having enjoyed the summer spectacle surrounded by the same Finnish landscape that once inspired Sibelius.
