When Wagner's revolutionary Festpielhaus opened in the remote Franconian town of Bayreuth, it ushered in a completely new way of experiencing opera in a grand theatrical manner – the manifestation of Wagner's genius, not just musically, but as way of participating in the many facets that make a visit to the opera so special. It is 150 years since his theatre opened on 13 March 1876 with a performance of Das Rheingold, followed immediately by the other three operas that make up Der Ring Des Nibelungen, and to mark this landmark in the history of opera, a new production will arrive in Bayreuth. Curated by Marcus Lobbes, Director of The Academy for Theatre and Digitality in Dortmund, it aims to impress today's audience the same way as Wagnerfirst impressed his audience 150 years ago – through the telling of this complex narrative in the modern era of Artificial Intelligence. Any performance of the full Ring Cycle is a major undertaking, but this unique anniversary production in the theatre for which the works were written, promises to be a uniquely memorable occasion.
