Semperoper Dresden
Since its inception in 1978, the Dresdner Musikfestspiele has attracted musicians of the highest calibre, from Marilyn Horne and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, to cellist Jan Vogler who became Artistic Director in 2009. But the city’s musical history runs deeper still – this was the birthplace of Richard Wagner and Carl Maria von Weber, and home to Richard Struass and the celebrated Semperoper. The setting for our three concerts is the Kulturpalast, the city’s modernist multi-purpose building with a new concert hall opened in 2017. Our first concert, The Long Night of Cellos, will exhibit a selection of world-class cellists who will offer interpretations of compositions dedicated to the instrument. Our next concert will feature Nicola Benedetti CBE, one of the most sought-after violinists of her generation, with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Edward Gardner. Our final concert will showcase Jan Vogler, also in tandem with the LPO. Both concerts with the London Philharmonic Orchestra will include works by Edward Elgar, with the full 2026 festival programme released in autumn 2025. During our stay in Dresden we will also visit the magnificently-restored Frauenkirche and Europe’s most important collections of Old Masters at the Zwinger Gallery.
