Dresden’s Semperoper is one of the most important and historic opera houses in Europe. Designed by Gottfried Semper in 1841 and then again, after a fire in 1878, it was destroyed in the closing months of WWII, reopening in 1985. The opera house sits in the heart of Dresden’s historic centre, close to the banks of the Elbe. The Semperoper has strong associations with Wagner and Richard Strauss; nine of Strauss’s operas received their first performances in Dresden. Immediately after the re-unification of Germany, an immense project to restore the city to its former glory began and today it is easy for visitors to understand the importance of Dresden’s place in the cultural history of Germany.

Music Programme

24 April: Il barbiere di Siviglia by Rossini.
Sebastian Wartig is Figaro, Taylor Stayton is the Count and Jana Kurucova is the wily Rosina.

25 April: La bohème by Puccini.

Maja Kovalevska is Mimi and Tomislav Muzek is Rodolfo.

Optional performance: Platée by Rameau (23 April) was written for a haute-contre, a rare type of high tenor voice and is a rarely performed satirical work about an ugly frog. It was composed to celebrate the marriage in 1745 of the Dauphin to the Spanish Infanta, Maria Theresa, well known for her unprepossessing looks. Instead of getting the composer into serious trouble, it was rapturously received at its first performance at Versailles. £69 per ticket.
