Short Break
The magnificent Belmond Mount Nelson hotel, known locally as ‘The Nellie’ is one of South Africa’s oldest and most prestigious hotels. Opened in 1899 and a favourite over the years of luminaries such as Lord Kitchener and Winston Churchill, this distinctive landmark nestles at the foot of Table Mountain. Guests enjoy a very relaxed and civilised experience in the nine acres of rolling lawns and rose gardens. The 198 bedrooms are beautifully furnished, most in a traditional style, many with private balconies. The recently refurbished ‘Helmsley’ building offers the ultimate in luxury and adjacent are a number of beautifully restored garden cottages. There are two restaurants; the ‘Planet’ with its stylish galaxy décor and the informal ‘Oasis Bistro’. The chic bar offers a large selection of cocktails and the afternoon tea service in the hotel’s lounge is an institution. Other facilities include two heated outdoor swimming pools, tennis courts, a fully equipped gym and the Librisa spa. The city centre is a 20 minute walk away and Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens and the Table Mountain Cableway are both within easy reach.
