Set in 10 acres of landscaped gardens, and now owned by the Belmond Group, Reid’s Palace has a majestic setting on cliffs overlooking Funchal Bay and is one of the world’s most famous hotels.
There is a wonderful choice for dining: ‘The Dining Room’ offers classic dishes in a grand Edwardian style (dress is formal for dinner); the Michelin-starred ‘Williams’ serves international cuisine with views over Funchal; the pool terrace offers al fresco lunches in the summer months; the ‘Ristorante Villa Cipriani’ offers the best of Italian cuisine (access is via 25 steps) and in the afternoon ‘The Tea Terrace and Lounge’ serves teas in true English tradition. There are three seawater swimming pools including two large, heated pools with sun terraces and one on the rocks below where sea bathing is also an option. Blandy’s is the island’s most important producer of fortified Madeira wine, and the lodge dates back more than 200 years. This one hour tour will take you to various parts of the lodge itself, including the wine vats in the Leões Room, the Cooperage, and the Blandy family's private collection of unique Vintage Madeiras, followed by a tasting in the Vintage room.
