This charming Madeiran country house was built in the 18th century and overlooks Funchal, just one mile from the city centre. It was the residence of the Commander of the British forces during the Napoleonic wars and his magnificent sideboard still has pride of place in the dining room. The house is decorated with great style and the emphasis is on friendly service in a peaceful environment with many areas to relax, including a library, a billiard room as well as the tranquil botanical gardens. The 40 bedrooms all face south over the gardens and the sea and are attractively furnished. Delicious Madeiran and international cuisine is served in the restaurant or on the terrace and the bar is perfect for an aperitif. Light meals are prepared at the bistro, next to the semi-covered heated swimming pool and there is a sauna and jacuzzi.
