Short Break
David Rattray established a team that are renowned for both their knowledge of the Zulu Wars and their warm hospitality; their long, family associations with the area and its people allow guests some unique Zulu perspectives. David’s wife Nicky has worked tirelessly since her husband’s death so that Fugitives Drift Lodge can continue to be one of the most captivating places to stay. They lovingly restored their reserve and, over the years, have assembled a wonderful collection of Zulu War memorabilia.Accommodation is split between the Lodge and the Guest House. The Lodge has eight luxurious bedrooms each with a private veranda. There is a lounge and a dining room and a fabulous swimming pool situated on a spur on the lip of the Buffalo River gorge. The Guest House (the original farmhouse), has six bedrooms, again all with private verandas; it has a small swimming pool, a charming sitting and dining room and an outside eating area with stunning views across the plain. During the day you will be spellbound by the talks and tours around the battlefields where superb storytellers make history come alive. Sundowners around the fire under a canopy of Paperbarks are followed by a superb dinner where the storytelling continues well into the night.
