This charming Madeiran country house was built in the 18th century and overlooks Funchal, just one mile from the city centre. It was the residence of the Commander of the British forces during the Napoleonic wars and his magnificent sideboard still has pride of place in the dining room.
The house is decorated with great style and the emphasis is on friendly service in a peaceful environment with many areas to relax, including a library, a billiard room as well as the tranquil botanical gardens. The 40 bedrooms all face south over the gardens and the sea and are attractively furnished. Delicious Madeiran and international cuisine is served in the restaurant or on the terrace and the bar is perfect for an aperitif. Light meals are prepared at the bistro, next to the semi-covered heated swimming pool and there is a sauna and jacuzzi.

Blandy’s is the island’s most important producer of fortified Madeira wine, and the lodge dates back more than 200 years. This one hour tour will take you to various parts of the lodge itself, including the wine vats in the Leões Room, the Cooperage, and the Blandy family's private collection of unique Vintage Madeiras, followed by a tasting in the Vintage room.
Our hotel was excellent, the staff were all really helpful. Wonderful views of beautiful gardens and sea from our room. We had a superb short break.
