Located just half an hour south of Edinburgh, Thirlestane is an impressive 16th century castle. The estate has remained in the possession of the Maitland family since 1260 and current residents Edward Maitland-Carew and his wife Sarah have refurbished the South Wing in great style to accommodate guests in eight elegantly-furnished apartments. Each is decorated with portraits and furniture from the castle collections and offers views of the parkland and estate, and guests can either self-cater or enjoy chef-prepared meals delivered to the door, perhaps with a bottle of wine from the castle cellar.
