Our new tour, in collaboration with British designer Dame Emma Bridgewater, will explore the remarkable legacy of the world-famous Staffordshire Potteries, where British manufacturers created a global capital of ceramics in the 18th century. The rise of the Potteries was founded on local clay and coal resources, and Staffordshire stoneware, earthenware and porcelain was exported around the world. Since its peak in the mid-19th century, the ceramic industry has declined in the face of international competition, but the bottle-shaped brick ovens remain a symbol of the region. We will spend a day with Emma herself, visiting her factory in Stoke-on-Trent, as well as discovering the region’s ceramic heritage including recent restoration projects at Middleport, Burleigh and Wedgwood.
